Battle of the basement end all square

In a match full of excitement Swieqi and Luqa shared the spoils in a match between two sides who are fighting against relegation. Both sets of teams were looking to bag the three important points to go further up in the table.

Swieqi United, who included newest signing Cristian David Hurtado, started off brightly and had a number of good chances whilst at the same time tried to limit the threat imposed by Luqa’s players. Despite all it was Luqa who broke the deadlock with a well taken goal by Andrew Scerri . Swieqi did not let this goal dampen their spirits and quickly went in search for an equaliser. Cristian David Hurtado levelled the score for Swieqi 1-1 after hitting the target with a spectacular shot. Swieqi tried to find a second goal before half time, however the first half ended 1-1.

The second half started off with both sets of teams having their chances to take the lead, with Swieqi coming close after a shot hit the post. Once again it was Luqa who took the lead when Stephen Aquilina took advantage of a defensive blunder by the Swieqi players to find the net and make it 2-1. Swieqi continued to show their fighting spirit and equalized matters from a spectacular shot, As the minutes ticked away, Swieqi went in search for the winning goal. They had the greatest chance from the penalty spot but Patrick Briscoe White saw his shot being saved by the Luqa keeper who saved a precious draw for his team.

Swieqi play Pembroke next Friday while Luqa take Hamrun on the 20th February.

In the other match played at the Corradino Pavillion, Zabbar defeated Vittoriosa 4-2 in the derby of the South. This victory enabled Zabbar to move further up in the table and return to winning ways after the defeat against Hamrun. Glenn Barry and Nikolay Filipov were among the scorers for Zabbar who now move sixth in the table.
