A Closer Look at…Zvezdan Vukovic (Msida-player/Swieqi-coach)

Name: Zvezdan Vukovic

Born in Maribor (Slovenia) on the 30th April 1989.

Nationality: Serbian.

Professional football player.

Plays with Msida St Joseph (First Division) and coaches Swieqi Utd (Premier Division).

Personal Motto: Never give  up.

Your name is not new to Maltese football as you have played for a lot of clubs in Malta.

Yes it’s true. In fact I’m a professional football player and I’ve played for some 11-a-side teams such as Zurrieq, Zejtun and Msida St Joseph.

At the moment I’m still an Msida football player. As regards futsal I’m also playing with Msida and coaching Premier Division side Swieqi Utd.

Why did you choose futsal?

I really love this game. Everything is fast and you have to think quickly. On a personal note, futsal has helped me a lot for 11-a-side football especially for better ball control, fast thinking and passing.

Give me one advantage and one disadvantage of this game.

One advantage is that the ball is always close to you. A player is always involved during the match.

One disadvantage is that it’s still at its initial stage and it’s still gaining popularity. I’m confident that this sport will continue to grow in the years to come.

How best can you describe this game?

Fast thinking, good ball control and a lot of set pieces.

Vukovic began this season with Swieqi as a player. He then moved to Msida but still stayed as Swieqi’s coach.

What about your current season?

Although I’m still a coach with Swieqi, I decided to help Msida on their way to the play-offs. We are very satisfied that we have accomplished this objective. Now I wish to do the same thing with Swieqi as a player.

Your most memorable moment so far.

The moment that I mostly treasure in my futsal career was almost two years ago when I played for Zejtun in the play-offs  semifinal against Hibernians.

Although we lost that match we proved to be a very tough nut to crack for the Paolites.

We were satisfied with our performance.

Your future objectives…

I think that this  month is going to be a very interesting one for me. Tonight Swieqi have a very important match against Valletta and it’s going to be a direct encounter for a play-off spot.

I will also be involved as a player in the First Division play-offs with Msida and I am eager to finish the season on a high note.

As regards next year, I am considering all the options but I will be involved surely in futsal.
