Zebbug and Gzira maintain push for promotion

Zebbug and Gzira geared up for their big match next Friday as they both won their respective matches in the FXDD First Division to maintain their hopes for promotion alive.

Zebbug defeated Marsascala 4-2 to obtain their fifth consecutive win in the league. Ricky Zammit scored a brace while Jamie Portelli and Karston Cilia completed the mission for the Rangers.

Peter Mark Cachia hit the target twice to reduce the arrears for Marsascala.

After drawing their last match, Gzira returned to winning ways when they beat bottom-placed Santa Lucia 4-1 .

Although Gzira had most of the possession during the match they only gained a narrow advantage before the first half which ended 2-1.

But in the second half they added two more goals to seal the issue and register their eleventh victory of the season.

Josh Parry (2), Robert Zammit and Noel Bilocca put their names on the score sheet for the Maroons.

Qrendi continued their negative patch as they lost their second consecutive match against Siggiewi. The latter won 5-3 to obtain their fourth win of the season and climb a step further in the table.

Naxxar beat Msida 8-2 to install themselves among  the  top five of the table.

Mark Spiteri scored a hat-trick for the Lions, Adrian Fenech hit a brace while Kurt Farrugia, Andrea Farrugia and Steve Sammut completed the mission for Naxxar.

Fgura saw off Mqabba 7-2 to go sixth in the table. After finding themselves a goal down, Fgura reacted swiftly and scored six consecutive goals to gain the final success.

Steve Falzon broke the deadlock for Mqabba but Fgura managed to turn the result into their favour with goals scored by Godfrey Cutajar (hat-trick), Noel Portelli (2 goals) and Adrian Vella.

Carlston Xuereb added another one for Mqabba but an own-goal by Steve Falzon sealed the issue for Fgura.

Kalkara dominated Sirens 5-0 to stay in the middle part of the table. Kalkara were the better side in the first half as they even hit the post twice.

Sirens were unlucky to miss a penalty and this turned to be Kalkara’s blessing as they scored three more goals to secure their victory.

Matthew Neuer turned to be Kalkara’s hero as he netted a hat-trick. Gerry Fabbro and Aaron Caruana added two more goals for the Greens to obtain their eighth success of the season.


A tight battle on top

Both Hibernians and Balzan, involved yesterday against Hamrun and San Gwann, managed to obtain three value added points to keep them fighting on top.

Hibernians are now two points ahead with 46 points followed by Luxol with 44 points.

Luxol lost the lead when Hibernians managed to beat Hamrun in a very hot game full of goals and controversy.

Hamrun opened the score with Christian Quadros Silva who was one of the best players on pitch.

Captain Xavier Saliba brought the matters equal a few minutes later.

Both teams retaliated for several times, mainly Hamrun’s Quadros Silva who scored four more goals during the rest of the game.

At times the tension increased with two of Hamrun’s  club officials sent off.

Besides that,  Christian Cacciatolo scored the third goal for Hamrun when hitting the corner of the bars and ended up in a ghost goal.

Aboussala Mohamed Elamari and Martin Svihalek also found the net for Hamrun.

A brace for Jose Carlos Meizoso Lopez and Melvin Borg, another goal by Xavier Saliba, Mark Zammit, David Bobokhidze and Alves Celino Freitas gave the well deserved three points for Hibernians.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Balzan maintained their third place with 43 points, a point distant from Luxol.

The first half was goalless with Balzan dominating ball possession and San Gwann defending cautiously.

San Gwann’s goalkeeper and captain Matthew Mifsud was continously involved with a series of saves.

In the beginning of the second half Boycho Barev broke the deadlock followed by another goal by Andrea Dan.

The third and final goal for Balzan came from Nicola Delre.

Luxol regain lead as Zabbar continue to impress

Luxol temporarily returned to the top of the FXDD Premier Division table-for the time being at least- courtesy of a hard-fought 8-2 win over Pembroke. They now wait eagerly today’s matches as their arch-rivals Balzan and Hibs cross swords against San Gwann and Hamrun respectively.
 The winners obtained their fourteenth success of the season and are still unbeaten boasting also the best attack in the league with 158 goals scored so far.
Ibrahim Tarik and William Barbosa were in fine form as they scored a poker each to drive their team forward into the match.

Ibrahim Tarik opened the score for Luxol as William Barbosa doubled after a Florin Anton’s corner.

Pembroke tried to make a reaction and were unlucky to hit the post through a Bryan Deguara’s shot.

As the clock struck the 12th minute, Barbosa again found the net after taking advantage of a defensive blunder to make it 3-0.

Pembroke tried to score another goal but Luxol keeper Bjorn Vassallo denied them with a string of good saves.

Before half-time, Luxol scored their fourth goal after a good counter attack finished by Ibrahim Tarik.

In the second half, Pembroke reduced the arrears when Florin Manea fired home past Luxol keeper Attard.

But in the 24th minute Luxol scored again. A majestic corner by Florin Anton found William Barbosa with the Brazilian placing the ball into the net to make it 5-1.

In the space of thirty seconds  Ibrahim Tarik scored two goals to continue widening the gap between the two teams.

In the 32nd minute, Karl Azzopardi scored a consolation goal for Pembroke but four minutes later William Barbosa completed his poker after performing a solo action and make the final score 8-2 for Luxol.

In the second match, Zabbar had the better of Qormi 9-2. It was a positive performance by the Southerners who stunned their opponents with some good runs and goal scoring occasions.

Zabbar gained a three goal advantage early in the match through Radoslav Kovachev (2) and Nikolay Filipov until Micheal Galea reduced the score for Qormi.

They tried to instill some sort of pressure on the Zabbar rearguard but were too erratic at goal.

Radoslav Kovachev hit the target again for Zabbar to complete his personal hat-trick and make it 4-1 before half-time.

Zabbar started the second half in impressive style and after just 12 seconds Omar Toutoungi slotted the ball past Jonathan Sammut to make it 5-1.

The woodwork denied Qormi a consolation goal one minute later when Allen Medati’s shot coming off the bar before Zabbar cleared.

A standing ovation followed three minutes later as Omar Toutoungi  produced a marvellous pass to free Daniel Axisa who advanced rapidly before firing home past Sammut.

Zabbar were not finished yet as Radoslav Kovachev and Frankie Xerri added two goals for their side.

Michael Galea completed a brace to reduce the arrears for Qormi but substitute Joel Grima, after being denied by the post, had the time to find the ninth goal for his team to make the final score 9-2 for Zabbar.

 

 

Melita save a point in dying seconds

Mosta and Melita shared spoils in an entertaining 2-2 draw in the FXDD Premier Division Relegation Pool.

Melita took the lead after ten minutes thanks to a Kean Degabriele goal but Mosta soon restored parity before half-time.

The second half continued to be a balanced encounter with both sides having some good attacks that were absorbed by the respective defences.

Mosta managed to take the lead a few minutes before the end but immediately after Melita got the sixth foul and received the six-metre penalty with Rudy Alinho converting successfully to earn a precious point for his team.

Meanwhile, Birzebbugia had managed to obtain three precious points to move into safer waters after beating narrowly Swieqi 3-2.

Vittoriosa show their class

Knock Out Finalists Vittoriosa produced an exceptional performance and got the three points that mattered after seeing off Zurrieq 13-6.

The Cottonera side proved to be too strong for the Zurrieq side who tried to show some sort of reaction but found their opponents’ defence in good form.

Vittoriosa  installed a 9-2 advantage before half-time and controlled the matters in the second half.

This victory enabled Vittoriosa to climb tenth in the table leaving Zurrieq only three points far from the relegation zone.

Darton Bugeja and Sean Vella scored a hat-trick, Kenneth Spiteri and Luke Stivala netted a brace while Steve Ferriggi, Ryan Mifsud and an own goal paved the way to Vittoriosa’s victory.

Tyron Borg was once again Zurrieq’s hero after scoring a hat-trick while Joseph Lia and Matthew Scerri scored their team’s six goals of the match.

 


Qrendi lose ground as Citizens take control of the table

Valletta  scorched to the top of the FXDD First Division with a fine 4-3  win against Kalkara as Qrendi’s title ambitions were hit massively by a 7-4 defeat against Msida.

The Citizens, who obtained their eleventh victory in a row, went on top of the table for the first time this season and gave a clear message to all promotion contenders that they are now the team to beat.

Ilija Milivojsa hit a brace while Charlton Scicluna and Renald Formston scored the other goals for Valletta.

Msida surprised all odds as they defeated Qrendi 7-4. It was an incredible performance by the winners who produced good futsal and stunned their opponents who lost concentration after Msida’s comeback.

After gaining a double advantage, Qrendi seemed to head to another routine victory but a great comeback from Msida saw them turning the result into their favour.

Chris Cutajar was Msida’s inspirational player as he found the net four times. A brace by Thomas Consoli and Joel Felice completed the mission for the winners.

Antonello Brincat (2 goals), Kevin Vella and Bertram Azzopardi put their name on the score sheet for Qrendi.

For the record this was Msida’s second consecutive success with Qrendi suffering their fourth defeat of the season.

Fourth-placed Gzira didn’t take advantage of this weekend’s results as they were held in a 3-3 draw by Siggiewi.

The latter broke the deadlock first but Gzira reacted and scored twice with Siggiewi restoring a 2-2 parity. Two minutes from the end the Maroons scored again but Siggiewi once again found the net in the last minute to gain a precious point.

Gzira’s goals were scored by Jurgen Mifsud, Aurelio Burgio and Antonio Fraschilla.

Naxxar put an impressive performance and had the better of Mqabba 6-1. Three braces by Mark Spiteri, Khail Drago and Adrian Fenech paved the way for the Lions’ ninth success of the season.

Konrad Dimech reduced the arrears for Mqabba.

Marsascala obtained their ninth success of the season when they saw off bottom placed Santa Lucia 8-2.

Silvio Mifsud showed great determination for Marsascala after netting four goals, Peter Mark Cachia hit a brace while Anthero Agius and Charlton Camilleri added two more goals to give them three important points.


Hibernians back again on top

Yesterday’s matches from the FXDD Premier Division saw Hibernians and Balzan on winning, with Hibernians back again on the lead.

Hibernians had a stunning victory against San Gwann with a brace by Celino Alves and Mark Zammit together with Kurt Bartolo, Xavier Saliba, David Bobokidhze and an own goal.

San Gwann’s reply came from Nizar Fawzi Salem Abouisha and Denis Di Maio.

In the following match Balzan made it 6-0 against Qormi.

For Balzan, Emil Andrei Raducu, Jovica Milijic, Boycho Marev, Gabriel Dobre, Clint Cope and Glenn Bonello managed to find the net.

Now Hibernians are on top with 43 points followed by Hibernians with 41 points and Balzan with 40 points.

Luxol win and go top

Luxol gained the helm of the table in the FXDD Premier Division for at least one day after defeating Hamrun Spartans 7-4. They will now wait eagerly for championship hunters Balzan and Hibs to play their respective matches today.

After ending the first half 4-3 up, Luxol tried to exert pressure to the Hamrun rearguard who operated well from good counter attacks with Cuadros Silva and Elamari threatening Luxol’s keeper.

On the other hand, Luxol’s Barbosa and Tarik devised some good offensive plans that got the desired results during the match.

William Barbosa and Ibrahim Tarik hit a brace while George Frendo, Carl Saliba and Florin Anton added more goals for Luxol who obtained their fourteenth success of the season.

Hamrun scored through a brace by Spanish Cristian Cuadros Silva, Mohammed Elamari and Christian Cacciatolo.

In the other match, Zabbar edged past Pembroke 4-3 to get their first win in the Championship Round.

Both teams came from a defeat in the knock-out semifinals and were ready to make up for their disappointment.

In fact the match proved to be a balanced one with both teams creating lots of goal scoring opportunities.

Zabbar had Rosen and Nikolay Filipov in top form and marshalled their team with good assists and passes. Pembroke broke the deadlock at the beginning of the match but Zabbar reacted swiftly by scoring three goals to end the first half 3-1 up.

In the second half Pembroke restored parity but the final goal was scored by the Southerners who obtained the three important points.

Nikolay Filipov (2 goals), Rosen Filipov and Omar Toutoungi put their name on the  score sheet for Zabbar.

Pembroke replied with goals from Florin Manea, Carl Azzopardi and Brian Deguara.
