Narrow wins for Msida and Kalkara

Kalkara managed to win their fourth match of the season after beating Mqabba 2-1. Vaughan Barnes and Matthew Buttigieg scored the all important goals that put them fifth in the table.

Even Msida joined Kalkara in fifth place after seeing off Fgura 5-4. It was a balanced match that could have gone in either ways. Chris Cutajar, Aaron Calafato and Julian Grima were among the scorers for Msida.

In another match Sirens obtained the second success of the season after a 5-4 win against Valletta. It was a balanced match with clear goal opportunities for both teams but finally it was the St Paul’s Bay outfit that notched the winner.

Balzan take hold on second spot

Balzan obtained their sixth consecutive win in the FXDD Premier Division after beating Hamrun Spartans 14-3. They are now joint second with Luxol despite playing a game less.

Despite the massive score, Hamrun was a hard nut to crack for Balzan. They tried to organize themselves to settle down Balzan’s continuous attacks. But after a sequence of goals, as normally happens in futsal, they found it difficult to react.

Balzan’s goals were scored by Emil Raducu (4), Gabriel Dobre (3), Marc Areny Albert (2), Glenn Bonello (2), Mark Tanti (2) and a goal from Jovica Milijic.

Vittoriosa had the better of Swieqi 9-3 to register the second victory of the season and climb up to the eleventh place with a six point mark.

First Division: Big match ends in a stalemate

Promotion favourites Zebbug Rangers and Gzira United produced an incredible 0-0 draw in the big match of the FXDD First Division league yesterday. It was a much awaited game that failed to live up the hype.

Zebbug were the better side in the first half and created lots of opportunities but Gzira’s custodian Neil Camilleri produced a string of important saves.

Jamie Portelli was unlucky to hit the bar for Zebbug midway in the first period.

In the second half, Gzira tried to react and were playing better but the Rangers’ defence was good enough to avoid further problems.

In the last two minutes both teams were very close to score but luck was not on their side.

Qrendi took advantage of this result as they won Sta Lucia 6-3 to top the standings with 22 points.

Antonello Brincat, Dirk Zammit, Bertram Azzopardi, Alan Spiteri, Kevin Vella and an own goal by Ryan Mifsud scored the all important goals for Qrendi.

Sta Lucia replied with three goals scored by Nicholas Abdilla (2) and Owen Fiteni.

Qrendi are the only team in the first division that are still without a defeat.

They meet Zebbug in another big match to be played earlier next month.

Mosta back to winning ways

Mosta registered their second success of the season after back to back defeats when they beat Zurrieq 7-5.

Two points separated these two teams before this clash so the match resulted in a balanced affair.

Mosta scored first but Zurrieq managed to level the score. This goal proved to be Mosta’s injection as they scored five more goals gain more ground.

The winning side produced a lot of occasions but were not good enough to finalize them well.

Zurrieq took advantage and played on counter attacks to score four more goals to make the score 6-5.

However Mosta secured their win by scoring in the last second of the match to grab three important points.

Two braces by Ryan Buhagiar and Armando Gjepali and a goal by Darrell Schembri , Matthew Borg and George Douglas Saliba paved the way for the Rotunda team.

Zurrieq’s goals were scored by two own goals, Lloris Garnier, Tyrone Borg and Lawrence Vella.

I want to develop my career furthermore

Last Friday, youngster Matthew Attard, scored his first goal of the season with his club, Hibernians. As he described it, “it was a gem of a goal.” Matthew, who is still 17 years old, began his career with Mosta and later moved to Hibernians to enhance his career.

This website talked to Matthew Attard after the match that his club Hibernians played against Luqa St Andrews.

“I am extremely happy to have scored my first goal of the season. I was really waiting for this moment and finally my dream has come true.  Everyone likes scoring.”

“I would like to thank all the players, staff and coaches that really supported me and gave me a lot of courage. I want to thank my former club Mosta for whom I had played and really brought me up as a player. Without them, I wouldn’t have been the player I am today.”

“Obviously I cannot forget my parents. They have been there to support me and were really patient with me. I dedicate this goal to them.”

When asked about his future, Matthew promptly replied, “My major objective is to focus and continue to play futsal.  I want to train very hard to achieve more and develop my career furthermore.”
