San Gwann - Current FXDD First Division Leaders

FXDD Futsal First Division League Round Up

San Gwann are leading the FXDD Futsal First Division League by three solitary points over Qormi with one game in hand. Qormi having played one game less than San Gwann and are well poised to join the leaders  if they manage to snatch full points from their next game against Zurrieq, next week. St. Patrick’s are following closely just a point behind second placed Qormi. The promotion challenge thus remains wide open with all three teams clearly determined to compete in top Futsal Premier League next season.

St. Patrick’s have so far only lost one game, against direct rivals San Gwann, but also lost precious points in draws against Mosta and Luqa St. Andrews. On the other hand San Gwann have lost against Melita and Luqa St. Andrews. Qormi dropped six points against title hopefuls St. Patrick’s and San Gwann.  Qormi also possess the best goal average from the leading trio.

Futsal National Team and San Gwann’s player, Dylan Musu currently occupies the top scorer position jointly with Marsa’s Ben Halim Salim Anis, with 15 goals, followed closely by Shawn Vella also playing for San Gwann with 13 goals and St. Patricks Radoslav Kovachev with 10 goals.

Melita and Luqa St. Andrews are placed in mid table positions, with the latter offering stern resistance to the leading trio and even snatching points from San Gwann and St. Patrick’s.

In the lower part of the table, Zurrieq, Mosta, Marsa are struggling to keep an edge over Xghajra Tornadoes in relegation zone, with Gharghur in last position with only three points from eleven games, clearly doomed to play in second division next season.

Tarxien Rainbows

FXDD Futsal Premier League Week 13 Round Up

Balzan regain joint leadership whilst Tarxien consolidate position

In the thirteenth week of the FXDD Futsal Premier League, Balzan FC climbed back to top spot, joining Hibernians with 26 points and a slightly better goal difference. In Tuesday’s game, Balzan trounced Luxol Saint Andrews 11-1, in a complete one-sided encounter, leaving the Saints trailing at the lower end of the table with just 5 points out of 10 games played.

Earlier, Tarxien-Zejtun offered more interest to the Futsal enthusiasts, as both teams were coming from positive results against direct opponents, Lija and Balzan respectively.  However, it was the Rainbows who had the upper hand in a keenly fought encounter, when they beat the Corinthians, 8-5, thus consolidating there placing with the top 4 securely. Tarxien Romanian International Gabriel Dobre was instrumental in this game as he managed to score 5 goals.

Floriana returned to winning ways on Friday, with a crushing defeat against bottom placed Hamrun Spartans, 12-3. The Greens opened a nice 6 goal gap in the first half, half time score 7-1. Floriana’s captain Kurt Bartolo and Daniel Brincat were once again in a great form both scoring a hat trick. It seems that both these players stepped up their game after donning the national team gear earlier on this year.

Lija Athletics maintained pressure on the top 4 group, as they shrugged off Sliema Wanderers, winning the encounter 6-3. The Wanderers were coming from a series of positive results, but Lija once again led by Jovica Milijic were determined to achieve the three points at stake in order not to fall behind the leading group. Lija’s Jovica Milijic and Rennie Tanti and Sliema’s Omar El Ghaouti all scored a brace in this game.

FXDD Futsal Premier League Week 12 Round Up

Tarxien Rainbows end first round commitments with important direct win

The FXDD Futsal Premier League first round came to an end last week, with Tarxien Rainbows registering an important win in a direct encounter against Lija Athletics, with both teams battling it out for a position with the top four.  With Tuesday’s 5-1 win, (halftime score 1-1) the Rainbows overcame Lija Athletics momentarily in the standings. With Tarxien evidently picking up momentum in the past weeks, the direct clash against Lija Athletics, as expected, offered a good futsal spectacle. The Rainbows had 3 Romanian international players (Dobre, Brasonveanu and Raducu) in their line-up, are undoubtedly one of the teams playing the best futsal at the moment and with the Futsal Play-offs championship format, all top four teams stand an equal chance of clinching the title.

Lija on the other hand were left licking their wounds, and their low morale was also felt in their second game in the same week on Friday, scraping a marginal 10-7 win against a modest Valletta side who are missing the presence of their inspirational foreign player Barbossa. Lija managed to turn around the score in the second half after being on the losing side at the half time (4-2) with Lija’s captain Jovica Milijic scoring five goals.

In the second game on Tuesday, Sliema continued to add to Floriana’s negative streak, beating them 5-3. This was the second win in a row for Alex Frendo’s team. Floriana started well by going two up in the first eight minutes but Sliema started a four goal comeback with Omar El Ghaouti scoring three goals. Floriana’s Pio Scriha was sent off in the 22nd minute for serious foul play.

Current FXDD Futsal Premier Division Leaders – Hibernians
As expected, Hibernians climbed to top spot, with a crushing win 14 – 2 over bottom placed Hamrun Spartans.  Boicho Marev, Hibs’ international Bulgarian player, was once again on the scorers sheet, with 5 Goals.  Marev currently leads the Top Scorer table with 27 Goals.

FXDD Futsal Premier League Week 11 Round Up

Zejtun, Balzan share points after balanced encounter

The FXDD Futsal League continued last week after a short break during which the Futsal National Team was involved in the Euro Championship Qualifying Round, with two games on Friday night at the Corradino Pavilion.

Zejtun Corinthians once again proved their Championship credentials, when they held Champions Balzan FC to a 4-4 draw after an entertaining and well balanced encounter. With this draw, the Corinthians confirmed their place solidly with the top four, behind Balzan and Hibernians who are both still unbeaten after nine games, ending the first round on equal points.

With the inclusion of Charlo Magro in the Zejtun rearguard and with Zvesdan Vukovic in outstanding form, the Corinthians forged ahead early in the first half. Balzan equalised through a fine display from Glenn Bonello but it was Zvesdan Vukovic who put Zejtun again in the lead in the 18th minute. Balzan’s Cosmin Anton levelled the score in a span of a few seconds but Zejtun kept their composure and their captain Jesmond Micallef gave them the lead before the break. After the break, Balzan’s Emena Basil scored twice, in the 30th and 36th minute to give his team the lead but Zejtun’s efforts were rewarded when they notched a late equalizer through captain. It was only thanks to Reuben Grech fine saves in the dying seconds of the game, that Balzan managed to salvage a precious match point from this game.

Earlier, Valletta FC suffered a thrashing defeat, 16-1, against an organized Sliema side, despite their latest inclusion Denni Rocha Dos Santos. Omar El Ghaouti scored 4 goals, whilst both Luigi Ruggiero and Andrea Zammit Tabona registered a hat trick. With this defeat, Valletta now face a stern relegation challenge with just two points separating them from Luxol St. Andrews. On the other hand Sliema, bolstered by their fresh registrations, namely foreigner Luigi Ruggiero now move to a more comfortable place closer to the middle section of the table.

The fight for a berth in the championship play offs continues next week with current fourth placed Lija Athetics facing an upbeat Tarxien side. With just a point separating both teams, this game is expected to produce a high level of Futsal entertainment.
